Considered one of the premier saxophonists of the post-Coltrane era, Billy Harper’s unique, with his soulful sound... Wonderful !!!
He served with Art Blakey's Messengers (1968-1970), the Thad Jones & Mel Lewis Orchestra (in the 1970s), Max Roach's band in the late '70s and Randy Weston's ensembles... Not bad !
This quintet recording on Magic Purple Sunshine Records is very, very rare, and is a fantastic piece of hard-bop jazz !
Billy Harper : tenor sax
Everett Hollins : trumpet
Armen Donelian : piano
Wayne Dockery : bass
Malcolm Pinson : drums
Listen to Billy Harper "Love On The Sudan"
About thirty years ago, I heard this piece on a german radio channel and taped it. Being an intense work of art, it educated my soul, accompanying and supporting me through times of adolescent desperation. One unlucky day I erased it by accident, but it never left my mind. It's just an ineradicable part of me.
